Liviu Geo Drughean is Professor of Thermal Engineering and Thermal Equipment at the Faculty of Building Services Engineering of the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (UTCB), where he has also held important academic and administrative positions, including Head of Department, Vice-Dean and Vice-Rector.
He obtained his PhD in Engineering in 1998 from the Faculty of Mechanics of the University Politehnica of Bucharest. His main fields of expertise include thermal engineering and thermal machines, heat and mass transfer, refrigeration systems, cryogenics, heat pumps, thermal installations and building energy efficiency.
Throughout his academic and professional career, Prof. Drughean has combined teaching, research, design and technical consultancy. He is a certified designer, technical verifier and expert in thermal installations, as well as a Grade I Energy Auditor for buildings and building services. He has coordinated research projects and served as Director of the Research Laboratory for Thermal Sciences – INSIST within UTCB.
His professional activity also has a strong international dimension. Between 2001 and 2013, he taught refrigeration machinery at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in France, including courses for undergraduate and international master’s students. He has also completed specialist and postdoctoral training in France and Sweden.
Prof. Drughean is Romania’s representative to the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR/IIF) and President of the Romanian Association of Refrigeration and Cryogenics (AFCR). He served as President of the ASHRAE Danube Chapter from 2015 to 2016 and as Chair of the ASHRAE European Region Promotion Research Committee between 2017 and 2021. He has also been involved in the REHVA Education Committee.
His scientific activity includes 17 technical books, university courses and design guides, more than 100 technical and scientific articles, and participation in over 76 research contracts. He has been involved in doctoral supervision committees, international conferences and peer-review activities.
His extensive engineering experience includes the design, verification and technical assessment of HVAC, refrigeration and thermal systems for numerous major projects in Romania. He has verified more than 400 technical projects in the field of thermal installations and carried out more than 500 energy audits for residential, commercial, tertiary and administrative buildings.
